5K Fun Run

Big thanks to all our early-bird volunteers who showed up and made this event happen. It was our first time doing this and organizing a 5K run on the land, but everyone had fun. The start photo says it all. And yes, we have an IG account now @keaukahacc53

5K Fun Run Fundraiser

Next year we’ll start planning earlier and be better equipped now that we know more about running this event. Expect more fun and more run.

Hālau – Mahalo to All of You

I (Eric) was personally overwhelmed with the outpouring of gratitude and couldn’t speak at the blessing. So had I found my composure, this is what I would have said.

When people ask about our club, I tell them we are more like an ‘Ohana than anything else. We are de-centralized and a bit chaotic at times, but we do our best. We have a wide range of characters and we all try to come together on the land and in the water to make us all better as a team and individuals. You can train to become a super competitive paddle-warrior. You can come out just to enjoy the company, culture, and ocean. Or, like most of us, do both of those things. And like a family we strive to be accepting and do our best to be fair. With all those moving different parts, somehow things always seem to get done.

Much like the large lei we wove together from all variations of ti leaves, we try to find unity and purpose together from a variety of parts. We recognize none of us are perfect but perhaps we can all find ways to be better together.

“Be curious, not judgemental.”

Marguerite and Marshall Shearer

“Be curious, not judgmental” encourages us to approach people, situations, and even ourselves with openness and inquiry instead of criticism and assumptions.

Being judgmental means jumping to conclusions, labeling others, or dismissing them without trying to understand their story.

Being curious means asking why, being willing to listen, learn, and understand before forming an opinion.

Keola and I were fortunate to have a lot of supporters and helpers. It’s almost impossible to thank everyone individually as literally 100’s helped out from donations to sweat and blood.

Let’s make 2025 another great season!

Mix 55 has been eliminated from States, however that race will still be run for our island.

Division 10-12 years old has been added along with moving 70’s race to the morning event.

Regatta starts will be similar to IVF Sprint rules of a pre-start line and a raised black flag if the crew is over the the line.

2024 Halloween Race

The Kona sun poured heavily out of the sky on the 90 paddlers lined up for both the short and long course of 6 and 8 miles on Saturday. A fun race with some paddlers in creative costumes, in spite of the heat. A light breeze from the south slowly built with some small bumps running from the south and on-shore. And the breeze tried hard to keep the heat stroke away but it wasn’t much relief.

It was a mass start racing 3 miles north to the first turn then the short course returned to the channel buoy and the harbor while long course continued south. If you were lucky, the long course turn boat didn’t yell wrong course instructions to go around the channel buoy again. If you weren’t lucky, you got to paddle some extra distance while others tried to cut inside you at the finish.

Keaukaha had good representation with a couple new paddlers hitting the long course and their first OC1 races: Lisa and Kalani Spain showed up and had a good time on their first race and braving the long course.

Long Course

Congrats to everyone keeping their momentum and training going. They brought home some hardware.

  • Eric & Nate – OC2 open (3rd overall, 1st division)
  • Robson – OC1 19-59 (19th overall, 5th division)
  • Grant – OC1 19-59 (21th overall, 6th division)
  • Kawai – OC1 19-59 (29th overall, 4th division)
  • Crystal Martinez – OC1 (36th overall, 7th division)
  • Lisa Spain – OC1 19-59 (37th overall, 8th division)
  • Kalani Spain – OC1 60+ (38th overall, 2nd division)
  • Long Course Results

Short Course

Most of the short course finished before the long course paddlers while the wind started to pickup slightly. We had some short course hammers too, including Kwai-Chang’s V1 debut.

  • Dave – OC1 60+ (17th overall, 1st Division)
  • Minion Maniacs – Wai’olukea & Kaliko – OC2 Jr 15-18 (25th Overall, 2nd Division)
  • Kwai-Chang V1 Open (45th Overall, 2nd Division)
  • Short Course Race Results

Upcoming Race

Next race is Nov. 23rd. Keep an eye out for one you can join in here: https://hipa.clubexpress.com/

Party Friday and Off-Season Paddling

NOTICE: There will be some Novice B training starting early this year and some other teams paddling some off season. Please contact us or your coach about opportunities. This includes new paddlers to the club.

Let’s Celebrate the End of the Season Together

  • Where: Keauakaha Hālau
  • When: Friday 18th at 4:00 pm
  • What: Potluck and BYOB

We had a good regatta season and some good times on the long distance courses with some teams competing off-island including the prestigious Molokai Hoe which hasn’t been run since 2019.

We had 2 open crews. One team put Keaukaha on the map finishing 3rd overall and the second crew not far behind at 21st overall. (Results are here)

Theses two teams also competed in the Henry Ayau and we had 2 women crews in the E Lau Hoe Race, not to mention all the paddlers who did the Queen Lili’uokalani race.

So let’s celebrate everyone’s hard work in 2024 and get ready for one-man races and 2025!

Upcoming local races:

  • October 19th  Halloween Race
  • November 23th  Abbott Galaher Seaman Memorial Race
  • January 11th, 2025  Steve Berengue and Scott Ferry Memorial Race

Don’t forget to watch for: Molo Solo, Maui Jim, Brazil Time Trials, Kaiwi Channel Relay and Maui to Molokai.
